Determining Social Factors That Contribute Toward Member’s Quiet-Quitting in the Workplace with Dr. Bernie Justilien
AU Colloquium Series
“Quiet quitting” (disengagement, doing only the minimum required) has been documented across organizations, including healthcare settings. Instead of viewing it as simple disengagement, attendees will learn its root causes, which often include burnout and dissatisfaction, and the specific factors contributing to it within the workplace across the board. In nursing, it contributes to reduced teamwork, increased errors, missed nursing care, lower patient satisfaction, higher turnover, and greater burnout among remaining staff. Disengaged staff are less likely to proactively escalate concerns, follow up on tasks, or engage in safety behaviors—so prevention/intervention is directly tied to safe care delivery. Nursing faculty teach and model professional behaviors, supervise clinical learning, and influence workplace culture. Helping faculty recognize and address disengagement in students and clinical staff supports retention and patient outcomes. Addressing quiet quitting supports continuing competence domains used by many nursing boards (leadership/management, communication, professionalrole, safety, and self-care/mental health). The presentation will help faculty recognize the signs, providing a new perspective that fosters empathy rather than judgment. Ultimately, attendees will be informed with actionable strategies and tools to promote a healthier, more engaged work environment.
