Is Information Technology for You?

Only you can answer this question. The eCreation Self Assessment should give you an idea of whether or not an information technology career is consistent with your temperament type, but this is merely a tool to provide you with insight into your personal preferences. It should be used along with other information for making a career decision.

In the final analysis, career satisfaction comes from doing things you really enjoy, day in and day out. So the real question is this:

Do you enjoy doing the kinds of tasks that would be required of you in an information technology career?

Here are some of the tasks you might do in an information technology career:

Customize computer applications to meet user needs
Design and develop information systems to meet organizational and department needs
Design and develop new technologies and new uses for existing technologies
Design and develop programs that collect, maintain, analyze, and distribute information
Design and develop user interfaces
Design and develop Web sites
Design, develop, and maintain online databases
Evaluate client needs
Evaluate the integrity of information
Implement electronic commerce
Install and configure computer networks, hardware, and software
Manage projects
Monitor and maintain information systems
Monitor system security
Protect computer systems from viruses, theft of data, fraud, and illegal intrusion
Provide technical support on information systems
Repair computer hardware, software, and related equipment
Research and organize information
Solve information processing problems
Stay informed about new technologies
Test information systems (hardware, software, and related equipment, databases, user interfaces)
Train others in the use of information systems
Work with cutting-edge technologies
Write technical documents such as reports and functional specifications for new products

Do these sound like things you would enjoy doing?

Did the results of your eCreation Self Assessment indicate that information technology might be a good career choice for you?

If your answer to either or both of these questions is "yes," then information technology could be your career. Alternatively, Is Information Management for you? or Is Management for you?
