Is Information Management for You?

Maybe. You're the only one who can say. The eCreation Self Assessment should tell you whether or not your temperament type is compatible with an information management career, but this tool only reveals your personal preferences-not your ideal career. It should be used along with other information for making a career decision.

In the final analysis, career satisfaction comes from doing things you really enjoy, day in and day out. So the real question is this:

Do you enjoy doing the kinds of tasks that would be required of you in an information management career?

Information management requires you to perform tasks from both the information technology and management disciplines. Here are some of the tasks you might do in an information management career:

Approve hardware and software purchases
Assess an organization's information needs and make recommendations for meeting them
Coordinate the efforts of multiple people or teams in developing information systems
Design and develop new technologies
Design information systems
Design online databases
Design, develop, and maintain information systems
Ensure compliance with government regulations and industry standards
Establish and monitor schedules
Establish policies and procedures for acquiring, storing, and using information
Establish standards for system operation
Investigate electronic fraud or security breaches
Manage software or hardware development projects
Monitor system security
Oversee information systems operations
Prepare budgets
Prepare operating plans, expansion plans, and contingency plans
Prepare strategic plans
Research potential uses of new technologies
Solve information processing problems
Supervise information systems operators and administrators
Work with cutting-edge technologies
Write functional and technical specifications for new products
Write reports

Do these sound like things you would enjoy doing?

Did the results of your eCreation Self Assessment indicate that information management might be a good career choice for you?

If your answer to either or both of these questions is "yes," then information management could be your career. Alternatively, Is Information Technology for you? or Is Management for you?
