Benefits of Distance Learning

Internet-based distance learning - Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) is highly desirable because of its:

  • Effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes - distributing learning over time allows the learner time to apply the newly learned skills to on-the-job projects.
  • Modest cost- text based asynchronous systems require little bandwidth and low end computers to operate, thus access, particularly global access is more equitable.
  • High degree of portability - all that is required for access is a computer and phone lines. Even participants who do not have portable computers can take advantage of internet based education by using services available at libraries, community service centers or their place of work.
  • Situated learning - because the technology allows access from home and work, the learner can easily integrate the ideas being discussed in the course with the working environment, or access resources on the Internet as required on the job.
  • Facilitation of peer-to-peer learning through learner interaction.
  • Ability to provide a permanent transcript - often valuable as a job-aid for future use by the student and their peers or co-workers.
  • Flexibility and ease of modification.

Peer-to-Peer Learning

The use of CMC for increasing peer-to-peer and participant-to-facilitator communication is one area that provides some of the biggest gains for education and is an area where CMC excels. Peer-to-peer and participant-to-facilitator dialogue is an important part of the distance learning experience. Participants in an online learning environment gain the value of peer-to-peer learning; that is, the informal and professional learning that a takes place in a formalized setting when professionals with common interests and goals convene.

Participant Accountability

Another attribute of CMC is the capability for participant accountability through a response mechanism. In an asynchronous online learning environment, participants receive valuable feedback from the facilitator. The response is personalized and not automated. It affords the opportunity for participants to learn in a structured format on real business issues that can be directly applied to their current business opportunities and situations. In the CMC environment, participation is documented in the electronic text archive. This record not only demonstrates the level of participation and unique contribution from each participant, but also can be saved and retrieved long after the course is completed.

This accountability is a by-product of the facilitated nature of CMC. CMC allows for a "flat" or non-hierarchical learning environment. The instructor assumes the role of facilitator rather than a transmitter of knowledge. Studies in adult learning reveal that adults learn best in the Socratic method. Within this method, the facilitator guides the online discussion utilizing a democratic and learner-centric approach. The facilitated learning process leads learners through the discussions and activities that enables them to discover knowledge from within. This element is especially critical for professional, adult learners. Given a stated goal to provide some accountability and to have a positive impact on the students' work environments, this accountability is key to successfully achieving that goal.

Ease of Modification in Response to Change

Another feature of the CMC format that supports its use in the program is the ease with which this format can be modified in response to changes. Today's industries are growing and dynamic in nature. The cost-effective nature and modular design of CMC is highly adaptable and customizable, thereby accommodating the changing climate of many industries and enhanced technological infrastructures.
