All the Credit you Deserve

At Aspen we believe in giving you all the credit you've earned. Read on to learn how to earn credit through exams, and how to transfer previously earned credits into our Undergraduate or Graduate programs.

You have three ways (besides course completion) to earn credits toward your degree:

- Credit by Exam (Aspen, CLEP, and DANTES Exams)

- Previous Academic Work (transfer credit)

- Portfolio Credit

Transfer Credit Forms - For self-evaluation of possible transfer credits

Transcript Request Form - To request transcripts from your previous school(s)

Servicemen's Opportunity College

Aspen University is an approved Servicemen's Opportunity College (SOC). Servicemen's Opportunity College is a network of institutions across the country dedicated to responding to the special needs of adult continuing education for people in the armed forces.

While military service carries no equivalent college credit, coursework earned in the military may result in equivalent college credit with appropriate documentation. For further information contact the Registrar's Office.

Credit by Exam

Students who believe that they have already mastered the content of an Aspen University course may document their mastery by means of a proficiency exam which may be taken for credits that may be transferred into Aspen University degree or certificate programs.

Students who desire credit by these exams should proceed according to the following procedures:

1. Identify the course within the degree or certificate program.

2. Enroll online, selecting "Credit by Exam" as the method of study.

3. Acquire the textbook required for the course. These books can be purchased through the Aspen University on-line bookstore.

After we receive your enrollment you will be sent instructions from the registrar on how to proceed.

Once the exam is graded, the student will be awarded either a ‘P’ [pass] or a ‘U’ [unsat] grade. A ‘P’ will justify the transfer of credit for the course chosen into the degree or certificate program. A ‘U’ will require the student to enroll and successfully complete the course on-line to receive credit.

Students must pay the normal tuition cost plus the cost of the textbook(s) for CBE.

* Academic credit awarded for courses taken by examination and/or portfolio credit may in no case exceed 50% of the credits required to earn the degree.

Transfer Credit

Credits earned through successful completion of courses taken at Aspen University may be transferred to other academic institutions. The acceptance for transfer of these credits is always determined by the receiving institution. Students wishing to transfer credits to a specific institution should always contact that institution to confirm first that they will be accepted.

Aspen's national accreditation allows us to accept your transfer credits from institutions across the U.S.A. or around the globe. Previous graduate work will be assessed during the admission process. A $100 fee is assessed for evaluation of external credits. See Tuition and Fees for more information.

Aspen University accepts transfer academic credit from accredited/approved academic institutions when the course content is deemed to be the equivalent to our own. The number of transfer credits granted for each course depends on the other college's definition of its credit system. Credits from a school which also operates on a semester credit system transfer one-to-one. Credits from schools on a quarter credit system will transfer in a ratio of 2/3 semester credit for each quarter credit on a course-by-course basis, rounded to the nearest whole credit. For example, a course for which the student earned three quarter credits at another college will transfer to Aspen as two semester credits; a course with four quarter credits would transfer as three semester credits.

BS Degree and Completion Programs

Subject to evaluation and confirmation, students may be awarded a maximum of 90 credits (from any source) toward the 121 credit Undergraduate Degree Programs.

Masters Degree Programs
Aspen University's Graduate degree requirement is the equivalent of 36 credit hours of earned credit. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for transfer credits at the graduate degree level. Subject to evaluation and confirmation, students may transfer a maximum of 18 credits toward the 36 credit Graduate Degree Programs.

Doctoral Degree Programs (Ed.D.)
Aspen University's Doctoral degree requirement is the equivalent of 60 credit hours of earned credit beyond the Masters level. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for transfer credits at the graduate degree level. Subject to evaluation and confirmation, students may transfer a maximum of 9 credits toward the 60 credit Ed.D. program. Any courses considered for transfer must be relevant to the Ed.D. program and equivalent in both content and degree level of graduate courses.

Portfolio Credit

Prior Experiential Learning (Portfolio Credit) is any learning experience that was not part of a college or university course and does not carry academic degree credit. Learning can take place in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Military training
  • Continuing education courses
  • Seminars and workshops
  • Training programs or in-service courses

Students applying for experiential credit must complete a student portfolio application. This document may be requested from the registrar's office.

Academic Standards for Award of Prior Experiential Credit

  1. Credit will be awarded only for learning and not for experience.
  2. College credit will be awarded only for college level learning.
  3. Credit will be awarded only for learning that has a balance, appropriate to the
subject, between theory and practical application.
  4. Credit must be appropriate to the academic context in which it is accepted.

Limits on Award of Prior Credit

A maximum of 30 credits in combination of transferred courses and experiential learning credit may be applied toward the program completion.

  • Duplication of Credit: No credit allowed for work that duplicates course work previously completed or transferred in.

* Academic credit awarded for courses taken by examination and/or portfolio credit may in no case exceed 50% of the credits required to earn the degree.

Applicants with International Credentials

Applicants wishing to transfer in credits or degrees earned at institutions located outside the United States must have their academic transcripts evaluated and certified by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES) member organization. Applicants will be assessed a fee by the certifying organization and should request that the report be sent directly to Aspen University. Applicants transferring in a degree need to request a General Report. Applicants wishing to transfer in credits toward specific courses in the Aspen curricula must request a Course-by-Course report.

To begin the process of transfer credit evaluation please complete the transfer credit self-evaluation form indicating the courses you have taken which you believe are equal to courses offered by Aspen and required for completion of the degree. You must complete the self evaluation corresponding to your program selection. Send the completed form back to us by mail or fax, and remember to include copies of your transcripts and transfer course descriptions. (Original transcripts for credits eligible for transfer will be required at a later date to complete the admissions process).
